Be Prepared
True, this is a far sight quieter than active battle, but it’s not any easier to listen to. Letting the side of the headphones she had been holding away settle back over her ear, Megamind leans back into her seat, paying close attention to the screen. It’s something she hopes to not have to go through, personally; not like this at least.
Biting her lower lip, her arms are crossed over her chest and trying to keep the effect the speech is having on her hidden. For someone usually so expressive, it’s difficult.
And then the animatron appears and she sits up again, surprised. Remarkable. The things she’d be able to learn if allowed to study the plans for that.
[Aqua takes her headphones off, so she doesn’t have to hear it anymore as her eyes well. She can’t stand it. It’s too sad and heartbreaking. Why would they want to show this to children? To traumatize them for life? She buries her face against Roxanne and tries to ignore the fact that she can hear her headphones perfectly anyway.]
[As the fake Lincoln rises up, Aqua turns to look at the strange robot. For being created by humans, it’s really well done. And, at the moment, she’s glad for the lull and the familiar speech. It’s better than being afraid or crying.]
The finale trumpeted over the end of the speech, the sky behind him turning to a giant American flag made of a red sunset sky streaked with white clouds and the stars slowly fading in on the left. The narrator went on to warble that the boy Lincoln spoke to in the medic’s tent did in fact survive and heard the Address given in person, along with some objectively treacly sentiments about how Lincoln preserved the Union and the legacy of the Great Experiment, and so on, as the animatronic star of the show returned to his seat.
The curtains closed and the lights came up, signaling the end of the show.
Matron took off her headphones, reflecting in retrospect that maybe this wasn’t the best attraction to go on first. “Uh… that was… interesting.”

Megamind flinches as the sounds come over her headphones, pulling one of the speakers away from her ear with the hand not in Roxanne’s. Loud noises she’s used to, but something like this, clearly a battle, well. It’s entirely different.
“Is it… supposed to be doing that?” she asks shakily, not really expecting to be heard over the sounds being played over everyone’s headphones.
[Aqua lets out small scream and clings to Roxanne’s arm as she whips her head about trying to take in everything at once. She hasn’t seen any real battles and something like this is beyond even the stuff that her Daddy has to deal with normally. No, this isn’t as boring as she thought it would be, but that still doesn’t mean she wants to be here.] Roxanne, I don’t like this. It’s scary.
The battle settled down. Other sounds came, the noises of a field infirmary. Lincoln’s voice came through the headphones once more, visiting a wounded soldier commended for extraordinary valor- a mere boy- and lamenting “this horrible war”, begging the boy to find the strength to survive.
Matilda swatted at her eyes roughly. “Freaking fog machine,” she muttered.
Then, the screen rolled up and the curtains rolled back, revealing an animatronic figure of Lincoln himself, seated in a chair. The figure rose and delivered the Gettysburg Address in a perfectly convincing display of artificial life, down to his blinks, his breathing, and his gestures.

“Really? I’ll have to wear them more often then.” Megamind answers easily, grinning in return. Typically she’d been having to custom-build her own, or use the in-ear type (which was preferable), but if it worked, well. Why not?
[Snickers at the adults and begins fiddling with her own headphones, hoping that he head was small enough to fit. Which, of course, they weren’t and she had to wear them the same way as Megamind.] When’s the show gonna start?
One of the ushers did the usual safety and etiquette spiel, then stepped aside and the lights went down.
The curtains parted. The show started off kind of boring, even by adult standards. A narrator spoke through the headphones about the highlights of Lincoln’s life as a slide-show projected on a scrim.
But after a few minutes, as they passed over the early years and moved on to the Civil War, things started getting interesting.
Lincoln’s voice came through the headphones, along with the sound of pacing. Vibrations came through the sights, first lighter and then heavier, as if he were pacing invisibly about the theater as he mused soberly over the wording of the Gettysburg Address.
Then, all hell broke loose.
The slides became scenes of battle on the fields of the War Between the States. Gun and cannon fire boomed into the headphones, first from one direction, then another. The seats shook with the force of impact. Lights burst from different areas of the theater, simulating the blasts of the weapons and the shock of impact. Fog drifted from the stage like the mists of war.
Even Matilda flinched and ducked in her seat over Minion’s globe. Apparently, these additions hadn’t been part of the show before.

Hand closing around Roxanne’s, Megamind is still grinning excitedly. “Yes, yes, of course we’re here, I just… it’s just sinking in that we’re actually here! And this room, it’s… wow.”
The screens, the exhibits that were on display just where she could see, she’s looking around at all of it, undecided on which to go to first, when she can. Even if they had time to look at all, she was still considering hurrying from display to display, seeing each of them as quickly as possible.
The doors into the auditorium opened. A pair of ushers wheeled out a rack of headphones and passed them to the strange little family as they prompted them to go inside and find seats. “Put those on after you’re in your seats, please,” they requested. “Move to the end of the row for the people behind you- all the seats have a good view.”
The actual auditorium was very plush, with cushy red seats and walls painted to match. Big velvet curtains hung across a stage at front.
Roxanne ensured to take Aqua’s hand in her free one, leading the young girl after the rest of the family. She sets herself in a seat besides Megamind and Aqua on her other side while Minion is settled in Matron’s lap further down the seats. The brunette fusses with the head phones and puts them on, then wondering if Megamind and Aqua may even be capable of putting the things on…
In the seat next to Roxanne, Megamind turns the headphones over in her hands, fussing with them before sighing and, in concession to the standard procedure of the attraction, sliding them over her ears with the headpiece back and against her neck rather than over her skull. Not a comfortable fit, but it’s at least better than nothing.
Matron grabbed a second pair on her way in, giving the usher a challenging sneer, and settled them over Minion’s globe as they sat down. “Can you see the stage from here, honey?”

She shrugged and wandered over to the office replica. “Classy setup. Say whatever else you want about him, the man had incredible taste. Wish I’d had a desk that nice back when.” She felt a little insane just thinking it, but looking at that nice office made her actually miss her shitty one back at the prison… a little bit.
The Alice cartoons played on, showing a live action child interacting with old-timey cartoons. According to the plaques nearby, the cartoons were made in the 30’s.

reporter-in-red asked: A man woke up in Megamind's bed. Naked. Telling her they met in a bar, and then later slept together. I know he could be lying through his teeth just to upset her but I've been cheated on before so I'm getting a little unsteady right now.
Roxanne, I have known Meggie nearly all her life, and- I can’t believe I’m saying this- she’s just not the type. Not even blind stinking drunk. She’s done terrible things in the past, but something like this is not in her, especially now after trying so long to be good.
If she says nothing happened, I’m inclined to believe her.
Do we even know who this random guy was?
reporter-in-red asked: Very specific. I like to think she wouldn't but when someone's drunk...
Christ. OK, let’s take this from the top. Exactly what happened? I need more context.
